چکیده

A growing number of experiments require low emittance ultra-short electron bunches in the 100 fs range (rms value) for the production of coherent light or the injection into a plasma for laser-plasma acceleration. Especially in the last case it is highly desirable to have a compact accelerator; hence a strong experimental activity is carried out to get such a beam directly from a photoinjector. We have performed beam dynamic simulations using the PARMELA code to study the performances of the alphaX photo-injector installed in the University of Strathclyde in UK * . This RF gun is aimed to produce electron bunches which have 100 pC of bunch charge, 100 fs bunch length and 1 ! mmmrad transverse emittance. We will show the results of systematic parametric studies as a function of charge and laser pulse duration as well as the natural evolution of the beam phase space as a function of the distance from the photocathode.

Pitz Experience on the Experimental Optimization of the Rf Photo Injector for the European Xfel

The Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site (PITZ), develops high brightness electron sources for modern free electron lasers. A continuous experimental optimization of the L-band photo injector for such FEL facilities like FLASH and the European XFEL has been performed for a wide range of electron bunch charges – from 20 pC to 2 nC – yielding very small emittance values for all char...

Simulation study of Cornell L0 beamline

To generate high quality synchrotron radiation in the future ERL light sources, the performance of the ERL injector, which has critical components, a photo cathode gun and super conducting cavities, is very important. In the injector, an electron beam is generated by photo cathode DC gun, and accelerated by super conducting RF cavities. Since an electron beam with −77 pC bunch charge and 1.3 GH...

Study of the Electron Beam Dynamics in the Fermi @ Elettra Linac

A study of the electron beam dynamics in the linac is conducted for the FERMI free electron laser (FEL) founded for construction at the Sincrotrone Trieste [1]. LAYOUT AND DESIGN PARAMETERS The FERMI accelerator layout is schematically shown in Figure 1. It consists of an injector, four linacs, two bunch compressors, a laser heater, and a spreader used to direct the electron beam into one of tw...

Beam Test of a Superconducting Cavity for the Fermilab High-brightness Electron Photo-injector

An electron photo-injector facility has been constructed at Fermilab for the purpose of providing a 14–18 MeV electron beam with high charge per bunch (8 nC), short bunch length (1 mm RMS), and small transverse emittance [1]. The facility was used to commission a second-generation photo-cathode RF gun for the TeSLA Test Facility (TTF) Linac at DESY [2, 3]; in the future, the Fermilab electron b...

Studies of Photo-emission and Field Emission in an Rf Photo-injector with a High Quantum Efficiency Photo-cathode

An 18 MeV electron photo-injector facility was constructed at Fermilab in collaboration with UCLA, INFNMilano, University of Rochester, and DESY. The photoinjector is now being operated in partnership with the Northern Illinois Center for Accelerator and Detector Development. The facility consists of an RF gun [1, 2] with a cesium telluride (Cs2Te) photo-cathode [3] excited by a pulsed ultra-vi...
